Tabaski 2026 : Le Sénégal face à un besoin de 860 000 moutons

860,000 sheep, including 260,000 for the Dakar region. These are Senegal's needs for Tabaski 2026. These estimates, from the services of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock, were based on an assessment conducted with stakeholders in the sector. The data was presented at a workshop dedicated to reviewing Tabaski 2025 and preparing for the 2026 edition.

The target for supplying sheep for Tabaski 2025, initially estimated at over 830,000, has been exceeded, according to authorities who attribute this result to collaboration between government agencies, operators, local authorities, and sector partners. This provided an opportunity for Minister Mabouba Diagne to call for increased commitment from all stakeholders to meet the challenges ahead. He noted that local production is gradually increasing, helping to reduce the gap between supply and demand.

The minister, welcoming the contribution of operators from the sub-region who participate each year in supplying the Senegalese market, recalls that on average, about 15% of national needs come from imports, i.e. between 250,000 and 300,000 sheep from Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, for an estimated value of nearly 36 billion FCFA.

Of the approximately two million sheep consumed annually in Senegal, around 860,000 are sold in livestock markets, while nearly 1,240,000 are kept for personal consumption. The Tabaski sector thus represents an estimated annual market of over 300 billion CFA francs, of which more than 142 billion CFA francs are generated by sheep sales in markets, illustrating the economic importance of this sector for breeders and traders.
