Tabaski 2026 : Pourquoi acheter son mouton cette année coûtera beaucoup plus cher
In an interview with Le Soleil Digital, Ismaïla Sow, president of the National Council of the House of Livestock Breeders of Senegal, made a stark observation: heads of households will have to dig deeper into their pockets. According to him, "the price of sheep is expected to rise again" as the next Tabaski festival approaches.
This forecast is not the result of chance but of a deliberate strategy by operators. Having learned from losses in previous years, sellers have decided to reduce their workforce to limit unsold stock. Adding to this reduced supply are soaring transport costs and the increasingly expensive upkeep of livestock. "This isn't meant to cause alarm, but it's a very real phenomenon," he explains, justifying this trend.
Peanut hay, a luxury that weighs heavily on livestock
This surge in livestock prices is also a direct consequence of the widespread increase in peanut hay prices. For Ismaïla Sow, the situation is critical throughout the country. He strongly emphasizes that the sector's survival depends on a coherent vision: "Food security must also go hand in hand with animal security."
Land ownership: the main culprit
Ismaïla Sow points to land speculation as the root of the problem. The conversion of farmland into building plots drastically reduces fodder resources. "They prioritized selling the land, which is causing damage," he laments. By reducing agricultural land, they create an artificial scarcity that drives up prices: "Anything rare acquires value."
To break the deadlock, the president of the Livestock Farmers' Association is calling on the government to engage in genuine consultations with local stakeholders, rather than relying on out-of-touch experts. "It's unrealistic to try to copy Western techniques in our tropical climate," he asserts, advocating for sovereign solutions tailored to Senegal's pastoral realities to prevent meat prices from becoming unaffordable for the average Senegalese citizen.
