Tabaski 2026 : Saint-Louis face au défi des 222 000 moutons

With less than forty days until Tabaski 2026, the authorities in Saint-Louis are refining their supply strategy. Needing 222,000 sheep, the region is trying to anticipate logistical and financial difficulties to ensure the celebration takes place under good conditions.

With less than forty days until Eid al-Adha, commonly known as Tabaski, the Saint-Louis region is entering the final stretch of preparations. On Monday, April 20, 2026, a meeting of the Regional Development Committee (CRD) was held to review the 2025 celebrations and refine strategies for optimal food supplies in 2026. The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Governor in charge of administration, Sidy Guissé Diongue.

The regional director of Livestock and Animal Production, Dr. Mouhamed Moustapha Sarr, announced that the requirement for 222,000 sheep for the entire region has been maintained. This figure was established after analyzing the constraints encountered the previous year and incorporating recommendations from stakeholders in the sector. "This approach will allow us to significantly improve the organization of Tabaski," he assured.

Financially, 351 million FCFA has been allocated through the stabilization support fund. However, shortcomings persist, particularly in the department of Saint-Louis, where unpaid bills are hindering funding. The authorities intend to address these issues to strengthen intervention capacity.

For their part, livestock farmers and vendors emphasized key concerns: lighting at sales points, access to water, and increased security. These grievances were taken into account by the authorities, who promised appropriate measures in the coming weeks.

Finally, the issue of livestock feed remains a key concern. After receiving over 150 tons of feed last year, stakeholders in the sector are calling for an increase in the quota and a reduction in input prices, which they consider too high and which are passed on to the cost of sheep. This is a crucial factor in ensuring that Tabaski (Eid al-Adha) is affordable for the population.
