Tentative de détournement de 4,85 milliards FCFA: une cyberattaque d'une grande ampleur déjouée au Sénégal (Interpol)
Senegalese authorities, in coordination with Interpol, have successfully stopped a large-scale cyberattack targeting a major oil company. The hackers were attempting to steal a colossal sum of $7.9 million, or approximately 4.85 billion CFA francs.
According to the Lyon-based international police coordination organization, the hackers used a sophisticated technique to infiltrate the company's internal messaging systems. By impersonating senior executives, they attempted to authorize a fraudulent bank transfer.
The swift intervention of law enforcement made it possible to block the transfer at the last minute and to freeze the recipient accounts before any withdrawal of funds.
This action in Senegal is part of a vast coordinated operation to combat cybercrime across Africa.
Conducted between late October and late November 2025, this police operation led to the arrest of 574 suspects. The total financial losses avoided or identified during this period amounted to over $21 million, or approximately 12.9 billion CFA francs.
Neal Jetton, Interpol's director of cybercrime, stressed in the statement that the scale and sophistication of cyberattacks in Africa are accelerating, particularly against strategic sectors such as finance and energy.
The operation has also borne fruit in other countries of the sub-region. In Ghana, authorities arrested several people suspected of stealing approximately $120,000, or 73.8 million CFA francs, from a Ghanaian financial institution using ransomware.
Ghanaian police have also dismantled a major online fraud network operating between Ghana and Nigeria. This group defrauded approximately 200 victims by impersonating well-known fast-food brands, causing total losses of over $400,000 (246 million CFA francs). Ten suspects have been arrested and 30 fraudulent servers have been taken offline.
In total, nineteen African countries participated in this large-scale police operation. The overall results show approximately three million dollars seized, equivalent to 1.84 billion CFA francs, and the removal of more than 6,000 malicious links from the web.
