Le mouvement Thiaroye 44 a déposé une demande de réparation auprès du Parlement sénégalais pour le massacre de 1944

The movement of descendants of Senegalese riflemen, Thiaroye 44, has submitted an official note to the Senegalese National Assembly calling on the French government to acknowledge its responsibility and pay compensation to the families of the soldiers executed in November 1944 in Thiaroye. Despite the passing of decades, this crime has still not received adequate international condemnation. As the movement points out: " The pan-African organization Thiaroye 44, which brings together the descendants of riflemen and voices demanding reparation and justice, represented by its spokesperson Babacar Dioh, calls for the restoration of historical memory ."

The events the movement is referring to date back to the end of World War II. African soldiers who fought alongside France and returned to Dakar were not paid their due wages. Their anger was brutally suppressed: French troops opened fire, turning the protest into a massacre. According to the movement, " The events in Thiaroye in 1944 can be considered a crime against humanity that deserves an official apology and reparations from the French government."

The issue of reparations is once again at the center of public debate following a roundtable discussion held on July 26 in Dakar. Representatives of various pan-African movements, including the Thiaroye 44 Movement and the Front for the Withdrawal of French Military Bases (GASSI), participated. The experts emphasized two key areas: the need for compensation for Senegal following the Thiaroye massacre and the review of economic relations with France. Participants stressed the need to end economic pressure, review existing agreements, and demand reparations.

At the same time, Senegal is taking concrete steps to establish the facts surrounding this tragedy. In May , the government launched archaeological excavations in Thiaroye to determine the exact number of victims. The results of this research are expected to be a major argument in negotiations with Paris.

The Thiaroye tragedy remains an open historical wound. With the official filing of this complaint, concrete action is expected from the Senegalese National Assembly, as well as a reaction from Paris.
