Vol d’un « mbotté » : un mois de prison ferme pour Touba Diop
He claims to have acted under pressure from society, to the point of committing a rather unusual crime. Young Touba Diop stole a "mbotté" (lamb), an act that ultimately cost him dearly. Caught in the act, he was lynched by the crowd before being taken to the Parcelles Assainies police station.
Placed under a detention order on February 2, 2026, for cattle theft, the defendant was tried before the Dakar Magistrates' Court. In court, Touba Diop readily admitted to the charges against him. He expressed his regret and apologized, explaining that despite his education, the lack of job opportunities and his precarious situation had driven him to commit this irreparable act.
The judge specified during the hearing that the animal was returned to the plaintiff, Mame Diarra Fall, who did not appear in court.
In his indictment, the public prosecutor requested the application of criminal law.
For his part, Me Ibamar Diop, defending the accused, asked the court for leniency, citing his client's difficult social circumstances.
In delivering its verdict, the court ultimately reclassified the charges against him from cattle theft to simple theft. Touba Diop was sentenced to one month's imprisonment and fined 50,000 CFA francs.
