Thiès : arrêté en possession de huit cornets de yamba, un livreur plaide l'ignorance
A delivery driver residing in the Cité Lamy district of Thiès was brought before the court for offenses related to the trafficking of Indian hemp, after another arrest by law enforcement.
Identified by the initials D. Thiaw, the defendant is no stranger to the law. He has already been convicted twice for using marijuana. This time, he is being prosecuted for offering or supplying marijuana.
According to the case file, he was intercepted at the Sindia roundabout in possession of eight packets of Indian hemp, 36,000 FCFA, and an iPhone 13 Pro mobile phone. The merchandise was concealed in an envelope he was carrying.
During the preliminary investigation, D. Thiaw admitted to the facts. He stated that he had been involved in drug trafficking for several years and intended to deliver the products to clients.
However, in court, he changed his story. The defendant denied any involvement in drug trafficking, claiming he had simply been asked to make a delivery. "I met a stranger at the Parcelles Assainies roundabout who asked me to deliver a package to the Lat Dior stadium. I didn't know what was in the envelope," he maintained. This line of defense contrasts sharply with his initial statements to investigators.
In light of this evidence, the public prosecutor requested that the charges be reclassified. He asked that the charges of offering or transferring cannabis be reduced to those of possession of cannabis. The prosecution found the defendant guilty on this charge and requested a three-month prison sentence.
The court has taken the case under advisement.
