Thiès - Programme Indépendance : Un Forum populaire "Waajal 04 Avril 2026" préparatoire de la Fête
As part of the celebration of Senegal's 66th Independence Day, officially relocated to Thiès by decision of the President of the Republic, in the Council of Ministers, the City
The city of Thiès organized a public consultation forum on Saturday, February 21, 2026, entitled "Waajal 04 avril 2026". Initiated by the mayor, Dr. Babacar Diop, and the City Council, this important citizen meeting, part of the "Independence Program", aimed to gather the concerns, grievances, and proposals of the population in order to draft an official memorandum to be presented to the Head of State on the occasion of the national holiday.
Organized around four thematic workshops (urban planning, infrastructure and heritage, employment and economic development, social services and governance), the forum brought together former ministers, directors-general, elected officials, youth, women, neighborhood representatives, religious leaders, economic stakeholders, civil society, technical services, and institutional partners. This moment of participatory democracy aimed to make the celebration of April 4, 2026, in Thiès, not only a major national event, but also a strategic opportunity to amplify the voices of the people and sustainably shape local and regional development priorities.
This public forum, designed to fully involve citizens in the preparations for the April 4th celebrations, and therefore already well underway, brought together about ten local authorities as well as representatives of civil society and other entities. Mayor Babacar Diop praised the strong mobilization of the city's active forces. He reiterated the conclusions of the last City Council meeting, which was dedicated exclusively to the preparations for the national holiday.
The mayor noted that relocating the celebration of Senegal's accession to international sovereignty is a sign of the Head of State's esteem for the city of Thiès, also known as the "City of Two Stations." He also invited the population to seize this opportunity to reposition Thiès economically, educationally, culturally, and in sports. The mayor believes that this renewal cannot be achieved without unity and without political divisions. He called for a collective effort.
Residents were also urged to prepare the city to welcome its guests. Improving the living environment, beautifying neighborhoods, and upgrading schools were among the priorities mentioned. A scientific symposium, led by Professor Ibrahima Thioub, former rector of Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, is planned for the program. On the cultural front, a major concert featuring international star Youssou Ndour is also scheduled for after April 5th.
