Thiès : Le kilo de pomme de terre vendu entre 950 F CFA et 1 000 F CFA, risque de grimper d'ici au 31 décembre
In Thiès, for the past ten days, housewives have been facing a surge in potato prices attributed to high demand during this Christmas holiday period.
Moreover, the price of potatoes, currently selling for between 950 and 1,000 CFA francs per kilo, could rise by December 31st. Traders, who are not hiding their concerns, are blaming the government. They find the situation too difficult for households.
"At a time when consumers have stormed the market to stock up, the quantity of available stock is below demand, with a marked increase in the price of potatoes," lamented some of the women we met.
However, the head of the Regional Trade Service, Khadim Ndiaye, principal commissioner for economic investigations, offers reassurance. "We are at the end of the harvest season and it is perfectly normal that this period of uncertainty can create tension in the market, which has indeed led to an increase in prices."
But, he said, at this precise moment, "there are more than 3,000 tons currently on the market, while the State is putting 10,000 tons on the market in terms of safety stocks by the end of the month. The situation will very soon return to normal for consumers at normal prices."
