Thiès: Le marché central et ses environs libérés des occupations anarchiques

An eviction operation is underway this Wednesday at the Thiès central market. Led by the governor, it has cleared a large portion of this commercial space. Houphouët-Boigny Avenue, Mawo Doucouré Avenue, and the road leading from the Senegalese Decorative Arts Factory to the Darou Salam market have all been cleared of illegal occupations.

In collaboration with the sub-prefects of Thiès-Nord and Thiès-Sud, the mayors of Thiès-Nord and Thiès-Ouest, the commander of the urban corps of the central police station of Thiès, the agents of the UCG and those of the Cadre de vie, the deputy governor, Georges Samba Faye, led the eviction of the merchants who were illegally occupying these public places.

The mayor of Thiès-Nord expressed satisfaction with this operation. "We thank the Minister of the Interior and the administrative authorities for this decluttering activity." Mamadou Diakhaté emphasized that meetings preceded this operation, with all the stakeholders involved. "All the mayors played their part, and it is all these actions that have earned us this day of satisfaction. The population supported this operation because there were no difficulties or opposition. We had taken communication and information measures through the market delegates," the mayor emphasized.

He therefore asked the authorities to set up a permanent monitoring system on the ground. "Operations of this type have been carried out, but the vendors return a few days later. Only monitoring can allow us to definitively discourage the occupants," Mr. Diakhaté confided.

However, the traders deplored the authorities' approach. "We are fathers and mothers. We only have our businesses to feed our children. Before evicting us, the authorities should find us other jobs. They have no difficulty managing their families, unlike us who struggle every day to make ends meet in order to survive," they fumed.

As a reminder, the prefect of Thiès, Mame Less Cabou, issued, on Monday, October 13, 2025, an order prohibiting all commercial activity on public roads, as of Thursday, October 16, 2025.
