Thiès : Les handicapés se disent "effacés" des bourses de sécurité familiale

People with disabilities in Thiès have once again voiced their heartfelt plea to the country's authorities. They condemn the increasing precariousness of their situation and the disregard for their fundamental rights, denouncing in particular a "mass exclusion from family security grants," persistent marginalization, and marked discrimination in education and access to healthcare.

During a press conference held at the Ahmadou Cissé Pire Disability Center in Mbour-2, after being prevented from holding a peaceful march, these vulnerable citizens directly appealed to the President of the Republic. They stressed the urgent need to correct this "major social injustice," believing they should be the primary beneficiaries of the social safety nets established by the State. President Yassine Ba further asserted that a significant portion of the quota reserved for people with disabilities has been omitted from the new beneficiary lists. She called for an immediate diagnostic assessment, arguing that no one is better positioned to receive this support than those suffering from total disability.

Beyond the financial aspect, Ms. Ba and her colleagues point to what they call "the failure of health insurance coverage." While official statements mention the enrollment of 15,000 disabled people in health insurance schemes, those directly affected say they see no sign of this on the ground. They denounce payment arrears from the government that have paralyzed the schemes for over two years, making it impossible for their most vulnerable members to receive any new medical care.

.

The group also denounces the failure to comply with the Social Orientation Law, particularly regarding professional integration. Yassine Ba is outraged that the 15% quota reserved for people with disabilities in the civil service remains largely ignored. She also considers it inconsistent to prohibit begging without offering genuine employment prospects or financial support to caregivers. Faced with this suffering, they demand an immediate review of inclusion policies, pointing out that of the 10% quota initially allocated, more than half of the beneficiaries are no longer receiving anything, plunging entire families into indescribable poverty.
