Thiès : les ouvriers réclament une nouvelle zone industrielle afin de lutter contre l'occupation anarchique
Re-elected president of the Thiès Region Workers' Association for a second two-year term, Abdoulaye Dieng has set himself several challenges. He particularly emphasized the need to create a new industrial zone to allow workers to carry out their activities in better conditions. He is therefore calling on President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to address this issue.
According to him, many workers are currently occupying public spaces, which exposes them to the risk of eviction. "With the celebration of Senegal's Independence Day on April 4th approaching in Thiès, several workers have received notices to vacate Avenue Caen. Many risk being evicted before that date," he warned.
Abdoulaye Dieng made no secret of his disappointment with the city's mayor, Babacar Diop. He accused the mayor of failing to honor his commitments to the workers. According to Dieng, during a cleanup day organized on August 2nd at the Thiès bus station, the mayor had promised to support the association. "Since then, he has become unreachable. He doesn't answer our calls or messages," he lamented.
The association's president also lamented that the development projects launched in the city in preparation for the national holiday were not benefiting local workers. "We submitted an application for accreditation to be included in these projects, but so far we have received no response," he stated, calling on municipal authorities to involve Thiès workers more in the city's development projects.
The Workers' Association of the Thiès region held its general assembly this Sunday to renew its board and elect its president. According to the vote results, Abdoulaye Dieng received 44 votes, compared to 6 votes for Mamadou Diakhaté and one vote for Ousseynou Laye.
Abdoulaye Dieng reviewed the results of his first term, which he considers generally positive. He mentioned the actions undertaken by the association to promote the development and well-being of workers. "We have carried out several initiatives in the field of education. The association contributed to the free refurbishment of more than 9,000 desks and benches in over 35 schools," he stated.
On the health front, the organization has also established a health insurance plan for over 700 members. Abdoulaye Dieng also emphasized that the association has successfully raised funds to support its members in their activities.
