In Thiès, road degradation has reached alarming proportions. And it was necessary to put an end to the ordeal of road users. Understanding this, the city's mayor, Dr. Babacar Diop, officially launched the rehabilitation work on more than 13 km of secondary roads on Aynina Fall Avenue on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.

The ceremony saw the mayor provide a frank assessment of the current state of the city's road infrastructure. "For some time now, the main complaint of the people of Thies has been the state of the roads. Our teams and I have crisscrossed the city to take a detailed inventory. The findings are alarming: several roads are in serious disrepair and require complete repairs," he said.

Among the most affected areas are Aynina Fall Avenue, Bountou Dépôt, the road leading to the central police station, Jules Sagna Road, as well as neighborhoods such as Cité Senghor in Thiès-Est and Ousmane Ngom in Thiès-Ouest. "These roads have become practically impassable, some are covered in potholes, especially the road leading to the regional hospital," lamented Dr. Babacar Diop.

Faced with this critical situation, the municipality has developed a two-phase strategy: emergency rehabilitation of the most damaged roads, followed by a more comprehensive plan aimed at permanently resolving infrastructure problems. Regarding financial resources, the Mayor of Thiès acknowledges the municipality's budgetary limitations but insists on the need for action. "We cannot hide behind a lack of resources. As mayor, we must mobilize the municipal council and seek alternatives," he says.

The mayor of Thiès has thus managed to raise 500 million CFA francs, but finds that this sum remains insufficient to cover all needs. This is why he is calling for local solidarity. "We invite local businesses, the people of Thiès, and all those who can to contribute. Together, we can do extraordinary things," he emphasizes. He also hopes for state involvement to support local efforts in a lasting solution to the problem.
