Thiès : Un gendarme en civil mutilé à la machette par un conducteur de moto-taxi pour 300 FCFA
S. Sèye, a 23-year-old motorcycle taxi driver, faces three years in prison. He is being prosecuted for possession of a firearm without authorization and assault and battery after attacking an off-duty gendarme, MD, with a machete after the officer had asked him for a ride.
The incident occurred in Thiès. According to the case file, the victim had left the central market of Thiès to go to the Grand Thiès neighborhood. Upon arriving at the motorcycle taxi stand, he hailed S. Sèye without first discussing the fare.
The customer then transferred 300 FCFA to the driver via a money transfer service before informing him. Believing this amount insufficient for the distance, the driver demanded 500 FCFA. The gendarme replied that he had already paid that fare for the trip to the market.
Upon reaching the Dixième Hospital, the driver demanded that the passenger dismount. An altercation ensued between the two men. The situation escalated when the defendant grabbed a machete he had concealed in his motorcycle and attacked the victim. He struck him several times, severing the gendarme's left index finger.
After the incident, S. Sèye fled to Touba. A few days later, believing the matter had died down, he returned to Thiès to resume his activities. He was then arrested and remanded in custody.
Appearing before the Thiès court for flagrant offenses on Wednesday, February 25, the defendant initially denied the charges before admitting to them. He explained that he acted because he believed his client intended to attack him and steal his motorcycle because it was dark. He stated that he was unaware the victim was a gendarme, as the officer was in civilian clothes and had not identified himself.
For his part, the plaintiff, Mr. Dieng, stated that it all started with a disagreement over the fare for the trip to Grand Thiès. He declared that when the defendant brandished a machete, he stepped back to try to defuse the situation, but that this did not prevent him from receiving several blows, resulting in the loss of his finger.
The public prosecutor determined that the facts were consistent and requested a three-year prison sentence. The verdict is expected soon.
