Tontine de Tabaski à Kébémer : la gérante, la calèche et les millions «perdus»
Nd. Camara, a tontine manager, was taken into custody at the Kébémer police station and is being prosecuted for breach of trust. L'Observateur reports that the women of Keur Diarga accuse her of embezzling approximately 4 million CFA francs that had been saved over the course of a year for Tabaski (Eid al-Adha).
Coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, these women contributed 100 FCFA a day to cover the costs of the celebration. But when it came time to divide the money, they were in for the shock of their lives: the cash box was empty. To justify herself, the manager offered a story that the complainants considered far-fetched:
"When I left the bank, I took a horse-drawn carriage home. Once I got home, I noticed the money was missing. I don't know if it fell out on the way home or if it was stolen."
This explanation is strongly contested by Marième Mbaye, the association's secretary, who denounces the story as "a complete fabrication." According to her, Nd. Camara is giving contradictory accounts, sometimes claiming to have lost the money in a horse-drawn carriage, sometimes saying she forgot a bag containing one million francs in a canteen in Dakar while buying fabric. "Frankly, she thinks we're idiots," the secretary fumes, as quoted by the Groupe Futurs Médias daily newspaper.
When questioned by investigators, the accused attempted to justify her inconsistencies by citing stress stemming from pressure and impatience among her colleagues. This line of defense failed to convince the police, the same source concluded.
