Touba : les tarifs des charrettes s’envolent, les usagers dénoncent une flambée injustifiée

In Touba, travel is increasing in the holy city of Touba. While carts remain one of the most accessible and practical means of transport for getting around congested areas, their prices have seen a dramatic increase this year. For journeys of a few hundred meters, prices now range between 100 and 500 CFA francs. This situation has sparked outrage among many users of these means of transport.

From the Ocass Market to the old garage, passing through the busiest arteries, carts weave through traffic jams, laden with passengers and goods. But what's striking this year is the price increase.

"For a short trip, they charge me 400 francs. Before, I paid 150, sometimes even 100. With the Magal's expenses, it's hard to bear."

"I came to the market to do my shopping with my children. Just to get in, they asked me for 500 francs. That's almost the price of a kilo of rice! We have to walk or negotiate for a long time," complains a 40-year-old woman.

The young merchant echoes the same sentiment. "Every day, I transport my goods with carts. But at this rate, I'm going to have to cut back on my trips. I'm losing money. It's no longer profitable," he notes.

Faced with criticism, the cart drivers argue. "We're suffering too. Horse feed costs more, tires, maintenance... Everything has gone up. We're forced to review our prices. It's not a lighthearted thing to do," our interviewees describe.

Amid rising costs, logistical needs, and economic pressures, carts remain essential in Touba. But their accessibility is now being called into question. Soaring transport prices are becoming a concern for worshippers, already facing an increasingly difficult living situation.

Time is money.
