The territorial gendarmerie brigade of the Foire district brought a fisherman before the Dakar High Court on Tuesday on charges of murder, according to Seneweb sources. The incident occurred on May 27, 2026, the day before Tabaski (Eid al-Adha), in Yoff Layène, at a sheep market.

The facts according to the witness

According to witness I. Lo, AM arrived at the scene in a state of obvious intoxication, looking for a certain ON. Not finding him, he verbally attacked all the people present, insulting them without restraint, before leaving the scene.

Returning to the scene after a few minutes, he encountered ON. Without hesitation, AM confronted him with aggressive and provocative remarks. ON, unemployed, did not back down. The argument quickly escalated into a fight.

During the fight, AM stabbed ON in the right shoulder. Severely wounded, he collapsed in a pool of blood.

Shocked, I. Lo and his friends alerted the fire department. Unfortunately, ON died during his evacuation to the Idrissa Pouye General Hospital in Grand-Yoff.

Upon learning of the tragedy, the gendarmes from the Foire brigade quickly located the suspect's home in Yoff Dagoudane. AM was arrested and taken under heavy guard to the unit for questioning.

The suspect claims self-defense

When questioned after being informed of his rights, including the right to be assisted by a lawyer, AM admitted the facts while invoking self-defense.

According to him, it all started with a financial dispute. ON had a disagreement over 1,000 CFA francs with his friend G. To ease the tension, he said he personally handed the sum in question to ON. But far from calming things down, this gesture was apparently very badly misinterpreted by the victim.

They then allegedly threatened him with a machete and unleashed a dog on him, inflicting head injuries.

Overcome with anger, AM said he first struck him on the head, then overpowered him on the ground, before stabbing him with the knife he was holding in his hand.

He insisted to investigators that he was only defending himself and had absolutely no intention of killing.

AM was referred to the prosecutor's office of the Dakar High Court for murder.
