Travaux de renouvellement du réseau à Dakar : la SONES rassure les usagers de la route
The National Water Company of Senegal (SONES) reassures road users and residents about the implementation of traffic safety measures on the Ouakam Health Center-Total Station axis, from October 24 to November 17 , 2025. "For the entire duration of the work, a system will be in place. Under the authority of the Prefect of Dakar, SONES will collaborate with the Gendarmerie and the road men to supervise traffic," assures Habib Demba FALL, Coordinator of the Communication and Partnerships Unit of SONES. Mr. FALL emphasizes the importance of this work for securing the drinking water supply of the Dakar department characterized by a very strong growth in demand. They are carried out within the framework of the Mamelles Seawater Desalination Project, the flagship project of which will be the Desalination Plant currently under construction in Mamelles.
The hydraulic infrastructure will have a production capacity of 50,000 m3/day, with the prospect of increasing to 100,000 m3/day in the second phase. The volumes produced will improve the drinking water supply of sixteen municipalities. However, beyond production, this project includes a "network renewal" component in Dakar, covering 316 kilometers. "The network renewal is a very important opportunity. The obsolescence of the pipes has been diagnosed, causing considerable losses in water volumes. This does not allow for the optimization of the water produced, also causing revenue losses through leaks and unbilled water," explains Mr. Fall. The work, which begins this Friday evening, is part of the network renewal.
The traffic safety measures correspond to the provisions provided for in the environmental and social component of the project.
