UCAD : une AG dégénère en violents affrontements, plusieurs blessés graves
The social campus of Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) was the scene of a pitched battle, punctuated by "scenes of unprecedented violence," on the night of Saturday, May 2nd to Sunday, May 3rd. The clash pitted supporters of two rival lists from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST): the "Ajure" list and the "Bleue" list, reports L'Observateur.
The tensions stem from the impending renewal of the FST (Faculty of Science and Technology) student association, according to sources at the GFM newspaper. The same source reports that Pierre Babacar Thiao, known as "Pi," leader of the "Blue" list and outgoing president of the social commission, held a general assembly at the faculty. Around 11 p.m., his supporters, accompanied by loudspeakers, headed towards the social campus and set up camp near Pavilion D.
Provocation through noise
The situation deteriorated with the arrival of the "Ajure" list's camp, led by Khadim Diouf, alias "Bamba Authentique," who also heads the educational commission. Equipped with powerful speakers, they positioned themselves nearby. The broadcasting of the "Blue" list leader's speech amidst this din was perceived as a provocation. Insults quickly escalated into a bloody brawl.
Four seriously injured people evacuated
The clash resulted in heavy casualties. Emergency services arrived and transported four seriously injured people to the hospital: two students, Hourry Diallo (with a head injury) and Cheikh Ndiaye, as well as two Coud security guards, Pape M. Gueye and Ch. Gueye, who were injured while attempting to separate the two sides, according to the Gfm news report.
The newspaper points out that despite the seriousness of the events, "no complaint has been formally filed" so far at the Point E police station.
