UCAD : Une facture salée de 555 millions FCFA après les violences de février
The clashes that occurred on February 9 at Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD), which tragically claimed the life of student Abdoulaye Bâ, also resulted in significant material and financial damage. According to Ndéné Mbodj, Director General of the Dakar University Social Services Center (COUD), interviewed by Le Soleil, the total cost amounts to approximately 555 million CFA francs. This total includes nearly 500 million for the repair of damaged infrastructure and public property, in addition to lost revenue of over 50 million due to days without ticket sales, the official explained.
Beyond the violence, the interviewee for the national daily newspaper highlighted the structural problems of an overcrowded and outdated student residence. The situation is all the more critical given that the university currently houses 35,000 students despite having a theoretical capacity of only 5,000 places. To address this shortage, the room coding system has been revised: it is now based on individual beds, with a primary and a secondary student assigned to each bed.
With this in mind, Ndéné Mbodj advocates for the implementation of structural and well-considered measures. He specifically calls for urgent intervention from the Board of Directors to find lasting solutions to this student housing crisis, which remains one of the main sources of recurring tensions within the university.
