UEMOA : Le Président de la Commission salue la mémoire du Professeur Moustapha Kassé

The academic world and the African financial sector are in mourning. In an official statement issued by the Commission of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), the institution's president, Mr. Abdoulaye Diop, announced that "it is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Professor Moustapha Kassé on June 1, 2026, in Dakar." An internationally renowned economist, distinguished researcher, and exceptional educator, he leaves behind the memory of an institutional builder and a major architect of economic integration in West Africa.

The Senegalese and African academic community has lost one of its most brilliant and rigorous minds. Professor Moustapha Kassé will forever be remembered in academic history as the "first dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar." In this strategic position, "his commitment and daily actions contributed to the development of economics and management education."

Described as an "eminent economist" by the President of the WAEMU Commission, the illustrious deceased profoundly "influenced us students with his competence and scientific rigor." Represented as a "demanding yet generous educator," Professor Kassé "trained generations of Senegalese and African economists, managers, and decision-makers who today carry on his invaluable legacy." The Union authorities also emphasized that "his commitment to research and development in Africa will remain a model" for the future.

An architect of economic integration in West Africa

Beyond the lecture halls of the University of Dakar, Professor Moustapha Kassé's influence extended far beyond macroeconomic and intergovernmental decision-making circles. The official statement emphasizes that "his contribution to the African economic integration process is invaluable."

The President of the WAEMU Commission stated that, "through his writings and remarkable contributions to high-level meetings," the deceased academic "significantly influenced the progress observed in the current economic landscape of Africa, and more specifically West Africa." In this time of sorrow, Abdoulaye Diop expressed his "deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and the Senegalese, African, and international academic community," concluding his message with these solemn words: "Rest in peace, dear Professor, may the earth lie lightly upon you."

Salam. RIP Doyen.
