Un anniversaire tous les quatre ans : le dilemme des natifs du 29 février

February 29th only comes around once every four years. For those born on this day, it's not just a birthday; it's a curiosity that intrigues, amuses, and sets them apart. Between anecdotes, superstitions, and choices about how to celebrate, this rare date shapes daily life in unexpected ways.

“People tell me I only age every four years!” This observation, amusing but true, comes up every year for many people born on February 29th. And with it comes the same question: “So, how are you doing this year?” confides Yann, a student living in Senegal. Before adding: “I was told when I was 8 years old that February 29th only comes around every four years. I understood that it wasn’t just any ordinary date.”

For her part, Dame Bousso remarks: "Our teacher and a classmate born on March 1st told me that I was 'hosted' in their birthday in years without February 29th. It was at that moment that I realized that my date was special and rare."

This unique characteristic is perceived as a positive distinction, a detail that stands out and intrigues those around them.

February 28th or March 1st: the annual dilemma

Every non-leap year, a decision must be made: to celebrate on February 28th or March 1st? "I prefer February 28th because it remains in my month. It's symbolic. But for some years, I extend it until March 1st, a bit like having two possibilities," explains Dame Bousso.

Others choose March 1st for a spiritual reason: "I always take advantage of my birthday to give thanks to God," says Mouhamadou Diallo.

For those born on February 29th, the choice of day is secondary. What matters is the moment and the loved ones with whom it is shared.

Between humor, astonishment, and superstitions

February 29th always attracts surprised looks and amused comments. "There are always amused reactions when people see 'February 29th' on my ID. Some people think it's a mistake," says Yann.

But this unique date is also surrounded by beliefs: "I heard an astrologer say that people born on this day often have difficulties because of leap years. In my case, that's not true. Thank goodness," another person assures us. These anecdotes bring a smile, but never hinder their daily lives. A rare date, but without obstacles. Administratively, a few online forms pose a problem, but it remains marginal.

For Yann, February 29th was never an obstacle in school, work or administration.

“On the contrary, it’s a date that people easily remember. It often sparks interest rather than difficulties,” he said.

This rarity then becomes a positive distinguishing feature. Birthdays are memorable, conversations are easy to start, and the rarity of the day adds a touch of curiosity to their lives.

An exception that is experienced serenely

Being born on February 29th means belonging to an extremely small group. But for those who bear this date, it is neither a handicap nor a misfortune.

"It's not necessarily the date that matters most, but the intention and the people with whom I share this moment," concludes one woman.

For those born on this day, February 29th is a positive singularity, a trait of originality that amuses, surprises and distinguishes… without ever preventing them from living life to the fullest.
