Hydraulique urbaine : Cérémonie de lancement des célébrations des 30 ans de la SONES
The National Water Company of Senegal (SONES) is launching a series of celebrations to mark its 30th anniversary. As part of these celebrations, a launch ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 23, 2026, starting at 8:30 a.m., at the headquarters located in Hann, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Dr. Cheikh Tidiane DIEYE, in the presence of the Director General, Mr. Abdoul NIANG, and prominent figures in the sector.
Created on April 23, 1996, following a reform of urban water management in a context marked by the challenges of production, investment, and population growth, this public water utility company focused on studies, investment planning, securing financing, and constructing water infrastructure. Through a public-private partnership, it transferred this infrastructure to a private distribution company (SDE, then SEN'EAU) and assumed operational control.
SONES's work on behalf of the State of Senegal has had a positive impact on the population's access to drinking water. In particular, it enabled Senegal to achieve the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) in 2013 with an access rate approaching universality at 98.5%. Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which aims for universal access, remains a key objective.
The 30th anniversary celebration is an opportunity to look back on the path taken by SONES under the authority of the Ministry of Water and Sanitation and to consider the future of this precious resource in the face of climate change, population growth, urbanization and the scarcity of financial resources.
