Hydraulique urbaine : La SONES célèbre 30 ans d'histoire et de solidarité intergénérationnelle

On April 23, 2026, the National Water Company of Senegal (SONES) celebrated three decades of service to providing access to drinking water. Under the banner of intergenerational solidarity, this commemoration paid tribute to the pioneers while outlining, under the leadership of Minister Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dièye and Director General Abdoul Niang, the contours of a new era of territorial transformation.

Thirty years old, the age of maturity and reflection. For SONES, this milestone was not limited to a simple protocol ceremony. Around the Minister of Water and Sanitation and the Director General of SONES, Mr. Abdoul Niang, the "water family" gathered for a rare moment of knowledge transfer, where the stories of the elders served as a compass for future ambitions.

Abdoul Niang's tribute to the unsung heroes of the nation

In his address, Director General Abdoul Niang emphasized that the company's current success is the result of a long process of resilience. He paid a heartfelt tribute to his predecessors, stating that "this celebration is above all a celebration of a community united by a sense of duty." According to the Director General of SONES, the institution has successfully navigated reforms thanks to the quality of its human capital, declaring emphatically that "it is the men and women of this company who have transformed technical challenges into social successes for the people."

Mr. Niang also emphasized the need to preserve this team spirit, reminding everyone that "the balance we have built is fragile and requires constant discipline, inherited from those who paved the way for us." This vision was illustrated by a retrospective exhibition retracing three decades of projects, from KMS1 to KMS3, showcasing the technological and institutional evolution of the heritage company.

The pioneers tell their story: the genesis of a national success

The ceremony was marked by a powerful commemorative sequence. Mr. Babacar Dieng, the first Director General in 1996, revisited the early days of the company, recalling the values of "discipline, commitment and punctuality" which forged the identity of SONES.

His successor, Mr. Aladji Dieng, opened a little-known chapter of history: the courageous decision of the employees to remain with SONES during the urban water system reform, even though they had options with the private operator. This sense of public service was also central to the presentations of Mr. Oumar Diallo (Operations Control) and Mr. Ousmane Birame Sané (Finance), who respectively explained the creation of the operations control framework and the complex strategies for securing funding during the recovery phase.

Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dièye: "Water Highways as a Marker of the State"

Minister Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dièye concluded the celebration by outlining new challenges. While acknowledging that SONES is a "high-performing instrument," he urged the teams to develop new solutions to environmental and demographic challenges. The Minister particularly emphasized the "Water Highways" concept, which, following the KMS3 project, should now focus on "major water transfers to supply the city of Touba."

For the minister, the objective is to eliminate structural imbalances and guarantee "quality water at the best cost." He reassured staff of the State's commitment to strengthening SONES as a strategic tool, while calling for total mobilization behind the vision of Director General Abdoul Niang to achieve this national ambition of water sovereignty.

Depuis quelques semaines, à partir de 10h, il n y a plus d eau au robinet, la semaine, et le weekend et la Sones pensent à fêter son anniversaire. Merci rek!

C’est le système qui continue. Des choix technologiques inopportuns avec des pertes financières énormes. Un audit technique des réalisations le prouverait aisément. De gros châteaux d’eau jamais remplis depuis leur construction il y a des années, avec peintures aux couleurs de APR à des coûts faramineux et scandaleux, des forages perdus en cours d’exécution ou après seulement quelques années de service, des stations très coûteuses à l’arrêt en si peu de temps, une station de dessalement qui traîne les pieds depuis des années, de grosses conduites qui cassent, des pièces inadaptées sur des conduites toutes neuves à plusieurs milliards occasionnant des arrêts fréquents, des pièces bâtardes inédites ayant entraîné la casse du fameux tuyau de KMS (pièces en Y et W à centaines de millions remplacés et jetées par la fenêtre), des anti béliers et protections sous-dimensionnés, avec finalement une mise aux normes coûteuse au frais du contribuable, une complicité flagrante dans le remplacement de l’ancien fermier par un nouveau qui n’a rien produit de palpable, sinon un capital non libéré totalement, des pertes financières depuis le début, une gestion opaque, le non respect des engagements (hausse du prix du branchement, avenant comme subvention d’équilibre de l’Etat, chose inédite). Un patrimoine foncier spolié qui mérite au audit OFNAC, de la gabegie, et rien que la renégociation du contrat de la station de dessalement devrait pousser au remplacement du top management, mais ce sont les mêmes qui sont là, avec le dernier DG APR que j’aperçois derrière les images, et le conseiller eau du PR qui fait partie de ce long bilan mitigé pour dire le moins. Le secteur de l’hydraulique urbaine est décidément mal parti dans ce nouveau régime !

Solidarité intergénérationnelle, je suis d accord, mais où sont les jeunes? Sur les photos, on en voit pas. J espère qu il y en a quelques uns de valables à la Sones quand même.
