Vaste réseau d’escroquerie : les faux agents de la Sonatel et le coup de 10 millions F CFA
The Colobane Gendarmerie's Research Section (SR) is investigating a network of fraudsters. According to the modus operandi revealed by Libération, criminals contact their targets on landlines, impersonating Sonatel agents. They threaten to cut off the line for unpaid bills in order to extract personal and financial information.
On November 24th, the newspaper reports, the network manipulated a woman's housekeeper (D. Diouf) in her absence. By posing as relatives of the employer, they convinced the employee to hand over 10 million CFA francs found in the room. The money was then transported by taxi to Kaolack.
Following the victim's complaint, investigators traced the driver to Baye Bitèye, a charlatan based in Taïba Niassène. Bitèye, who had received the funds, was arrested and transferred to Dakar.
The suspect was brought before a judge last Friday on charges of criminal conspiracy, fraud, impersonating a public official, and forgery. The network, which extends as far as Ziguinchor, is currently being dismantled. Sonatel, whose image has been directly impacted, has joined the case as a civil party, the same source added.
