Five fishermen from Guet-Ndar narrowly escaped death. 142 km off the coast of Saint-Louis, returning from an ordinary day of fishing, the engine of their pirogue broke down. They replaced it with the spare. But nearly 100 km later, the second engine also broke down. Their pirogue drifted. The crew's attempts to stop it were in vain. Their ordeal began.
In L'Observateur, one of the survivors, 27-year-old Yatma Dièye, recounts their nineteen days in hell. They ate and drank only once a day, at precisely 1 p.m. They survived on fish braised using pieces of wood torn from the dugout canoe. "We tried everything: rowing, using buoys, even considering jumping into the water," the witness told the newspaper. Deterred by the cold, the shipwrecked survivors remained on board.
It was on the 18th day that the light dawned. The telephone network began to appear. "I positioned myself at the front of the dugout canoe, holding a stick as high as possible," Yatma Dièye explains. A voicemail sent to his brother, Maguinar, finally reached its destination. The fishermen of Yoff, alerted, sent a dugout canoe. It was deliverance.
The five fishermen landed in Yoff on a Saturday at 5:30 p.m. "We were at the end of our rope. One more day, and we would have succumbed," says Yatma Dièye, who notes that during their 19 days in the iron, he kept thinking about his wife, whom he married last June and who was pregnant, as well as his mother.
Plunged into torpor and sadness at the announcement of the disappearance of the five fishermen, Guet Ndar quickly regained his spirit after learning that his sons are safe and sound.

Dieu merci !
