Droits des femmes : Les collectifs féministes dénoncent l’instrumentalisation du Protocole de Maputo
Feminist civil society is taking a stand. In a statement released following a press conference, several organizations denounced the instrumentalization of the Maputo Protocol by certain political and social actors, accused of sowing confusion by wrongly associating it with debates on homosexuality.
Ratified by Senegal in 2004 without reservation, the Maputo Protocol, officially titled Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, is presented by feminist groups as a foundational text. "It guarantees essential gains in terms of health, physical integrity, political participation, and social justice for women and girls," the text states.
The signatory organizations believe that these attempts at conflation constitute a dangerous manipulation that diverts attention from the real emergencies: the fight against patriarchal violence, discrimination and persistent inequalities.
"Using an African legal text intended to protect women as a diversionary tactic," they remind us, calling for a public debate based on legal rigor and respect for the rule of law.
They urge authorities, opinion leaders, and the media not to succumb to populist rhetoric and to support the full implementation of the Protocol with concrete measures. For these groups, defending this text means protecting the fundamental rights of women, in accordance with the country's African and international commitments.
