«XFG» : CE QUE L’ON SAIT SUR CE VARIANT, SURNOMMÉ «FRANKENSTEIN», DERRIÈRE LE REBOND DE COVID-19 EN FRANCE

Covid-19 cases increased by 37% among adults during the week of September 15-21, according to Public Health France. This increase is believed to be partly due to the XFG variant, which is spreading in Europe from Asia and the United States.

A new wave is approaching. Covid-19 is making a comeback in France at the start of autumn, with a 37% increase in cases among adults during the week of September 15 to 21 (i.e. 375 more emergency room visits and hospitalizations), after a 29% increase the previous week, details Public Health France . The cause: a new variant named XFG by the WHO , which evades the immune system.

According to data from the Sentinelles network, the epidemiological surveillance and research platform, the incidence rate of Covid-19 cases seen in general practice for an acute respiratory infection has been estimated at 48 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in France. This new wave of Covid-19 is accompanied by a new variant called "XFG" or "Stratus," and nicknamed "Frankenstein," because it is the result of the hybridization of several strains of the virus.

On June 25, 2025, the World Health Organization's (WHO) Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution (TAG-VE) added the XFG variant to its list of SARS-CoV-2 variants under surveillance , as global proportions rapidly increase. In their initial risk assessment, however, experts stated that the risk to public health was currently low.

NO MORE SERIOUS INFECTIONS

XFG is one of several offshoots of the JN.1 subvariant , and the oldest sample was collected in late January. In May, the proportion of XFG increased in all three WHO regions that regularly share SARS-CoV-2 sequences, particularly in Southeast Asia. Cases and hospitalizations are increasing in countries with high proportions of the XFG variant, but there is no evidence yet that infections are more severe, the WHO said.

In the United States, the XFG variant accounted for 14% of samples collected, according to the latest update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which covers data collected through June 21. The WHO estimates that XFG appears to have moderate growth and a low risk of immune escape (when antibodies are neutralized). However, these estimates will need to be confirmed because the expansion of the variant is recent and there is only one study at this stage to assess antigenicity, i.e., the ability of a protein to make p

In France, a vaccination campaign against influenza and Covid-19 is scheduled to take place between October 14 and January 31, 2026. The first orders for Covid-19 vaccines have been open since Monday, September 22 on the Public Health France portal.
