Ziguinchor : 35 candidats à l'émigration interceptés à Elinkine
During the night of May 29-30, 2026, a joint operation by security forces thwarted an attempt at irregular migration departing from the Elinkine wharf in the commune of Mlomp, Loudia Ouolof district. Alerted by intelligence indicating an imminent departure, the units involved, supported by the Southern Naval Base, established a surveillance and tracking operation.
Around 2:00 AM, a pirogue carrying undocumented migrants was tracked and intercepted shortly after leaving the coast. The operation led to the arrest of 35 people, all male, including 30 Senegalese, 3 Ghanaians, and 2 Gambians. In addition to the arrests, security forces seized a significant amount of equipment intended for the crossing: a pirogue, 40 sixty-liter jerrycans of gasoline, 23 twenty-liter jerrycans, 3 twenty-liter barrels, 24 one-liter cans of motor oil, a Map 76 GPS device, and a 40-horsepower outboard motor.
The individuals arrested were handed over to the Ziguinchor Gendarmerie Research Section, which is responsible for continuing the investigation. The suspected smuggler, his mobile phone, and the migrants' luggage were also seized. The confiscated fuel is being held in Oussouye pending a decision from the relevant authorities.
An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the organization of this attempted departure and to identify any accomplices involved in the network.
