Ziguinchor : routes impraticables après les pluies, un calvaire pour les usagers
In Ziguinchor, the saying "after the rain comes the good weather" does not apply. Heavy rains make the roads of Senegal's southern capital impassable, plunging road users into a veritable ordeal.
The intersection of the Boucotte Market Road towards the Peace Hospital, the craft village road leading to Insa Ndiaye Street, and the Yamatogne police station road become a nightmare for pedestrians, motorcyclists, and motorists from the first drops of rain. Drivers must bypass flooded areas or park their vehicles, while illegal motorcycles and taxis avoid these roads, fearing that the water will damage their engines. Residents are often forced to walk through stagnant water to reach Assane Seck University or other destinations. The situation is aggravated by the advanced state of deterioration of several roads, including the axis linking Assane Seck University to the Com Zone, the Peace Hospital, and the Boucotte Market. In the city, the road along the Jean Paul II roundabout towards the Silence Hospital, in front of the prefecture, is particularly critical. This section, already closed to traffic due to its condition, becomes indescribable in the rains, complicating the lives of the tenants of the prefecture and the elements of the fire brigade headquarters. On August 18, 2025, before a new wave of rain, a delegation from the Ministry of Infrastructure, Land and Air Transport carried out a mission to Ziguinchor. Bassirou Coly, deputy mayor and chairman of the board of directors of the Société Générale des Grands Trains du Sénégal, led this mission alongside Mayor Djibril Sonko and a technical team from Ageroute. In a WhatsApp message, he noted "the advanced state of deterioration of the road network" and announced that "urgent decisions have been taken to immediately launch the rehabilitation of certain roads," with other projects planned. Coly also emphasized that this problem does not only affect Ziguinchor: "Many localities in the country are experiencing the same situation, a direct consequence of the debt hidden by the former regime, which led to the suspension of several projects." The people of Ziguinchor hope that these announced measures will put an end to their ordeal and make the city's roads passable again.
