Finale CAN 2025 : Claude Leroy raconte ses conversations avec Sadio Mané , Regragui et Pape Thiaw
Claude Leroy witnessed firsthand the incidents that occurred during last Sunday's Africa Cup of Nations final. The French coach was indeed on the sidelines when the Senegalese players decided to leave the field in protest against the referee's decisions.
"I told him, 'Go get your buddies and bring them back to the field'..."
Sadio Mané, who was hesitating to join his teammates and staff in the locker room, went over to him to ask for advice.
“He was heading towards the locker room. He saw me, came over, and said, ‘What would you do?’ I told him, ‘Go get your friends and bring them back onto the pitch,’” revealed Claude Leroy. He emphasized that Mané was hesitant because the entire coaching staff had left, as had the vast majority of the players.
"He was going to join his teammates, but somewhere deep down he was thinking that something really stupid was going to happen," said Claude Leroy.
Immediately afterwards, the Frenchman ran into Walid Regragui who asked him what he had said to the Senegalese. "I told them to start again," he replied.
"He immediately said it was nonsense."
The winner of the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon said he also discussed the incident with Senegal's coach, Pape Thiaw. Thiaw reportedly admitted his mistake immediately. "I spoke to him afterward. What happened? He immediately said it was a stupid thing to do," revealed Claude Leroy.
