Coupe du monde 2026 : Après deux défaites, pourquoi le Sénégal n'est pas encore éliminé
Having lost to Norway 3-2, just days after their defeat to France (3-1), Senegal is on the brink of elimination. However, the Lions of Teranga are not yet out of the running.
Jordan, Turkey, Haiti, and Tunisia have lost their first two matches of the 2026 World Cup and are already eliminated from the competition. However, Senegal and Iraq, in the same situation, can still qualify. The reason is that Senegal's group is the only one with two teams still on zero points after two matchdays (Senegal and Iraq, who will face each other). On the final matchday, the winner of that match will finish third, hoping for favorable circumstances to be reinstated.
Conversely, in the other groups with already eliminated teams, FIFA's rules, which prioritize head-to-head results over goal difference, eliminate the four teams mentioned above. For example, Turkey (0 points) can no longer overtake the two teams that defeated them (Paraguay and Australia), while the United States is already out of reach with 6 points. Tunisia, meanwhile, can no longer overtake the third-placed team in the group, Sweden, who beat them on the first matchday (5-1), while their next opponent, the Netherlands, has a 4-point lead.
But for Senegal to qualify, they will need several favorable results in the other groups. Currently, the Lions of Teranga are last in the standings of the best third-placed teams, with 0 points and a goal difference of -3.
