Coupe du monde 2026 : l’Argentine élimine une valeureuse équipe du Cap-Vert
Reigning world champions Argentina qualified for the round of 16 of the World Cup, but not without difficulty. Lionel Messi and his teammates had to fight hard against an impressive Cape Verde side, who pushed them to extra time (3-2).
Argentina, the overwhelming favorites on paper, opened the scoring in the 29th minute thanks to Lionel Messi. Played through by Lisandro Martínez, the Argentine captain broke free behind the Cape Verdean defense before controlling the ball and beating Vozinha with a right-footed shot.
Far from being intimidated, the Cape Verdeans played with confidence and held their own against the world champions. Despite their impressive performance, they went into halftime trailing by a goal.
From the start of the second half, however, the Blue Sharks were rewarded for their efforts. On their first real dangerous opportunity, Duarte, perfectly set up by Ryan Mendes, beat Emiliano Martinez to level the score (59th minute ).
Hurt in their pride, Argentina immediately regained the initiative. But Vozinha was imperious, making a series of crucial saves, notably against Lionel Messi in the 63rd, 73rd, and 90th minutes. At the end of regulation time, the two teams were still tied (1-1).
From the start of extra time, Argentina regained the lead. From a corner taken by Messi on the left, Alexis Mac Allister headed the ball towards the far post, where Lisandro Martínez controlled it before beating Vozinha with a powerful left-footed shot under the crossbar (92nd minute).
Just when Argentina thought they had done the hard part, Cape Verde once again displayed remarkable courage. In the 103rd minute, Sidny Lopes Cabral, having moved forward, beat Mac Allister before unleashing a superb curling shot that left Emiliano Martínez with no chance.
Reinvigorated by the equalizer, Cape Verde continued to put pressure on Argentina. But the latter ultimately had the last word. From another Lionel Messi corner, Cristian Romero rose highest to head home the winning goal in the 111th minute.
Thanks to this decisive goal from the Tottenham defender, Argentina won 3-2 after extra time and secured their qualification for the round of 16 after a spectacular match against a courageous and valiant Cape Verde team.
