A key figure for the Senegalese national football team at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Cheikhou Kouyaté is preparing for another global adventure with the Lions. But this time, the former Senegalese captain is not expected to be on the pitch as a player. At 36, he will join the coaching staff of national team coach Pape Thiaw as part of the preparations for the 2026 World Cup, according to Dsport.

Although he has not yet officially announced his international retirement, the former Senegalese midfielder has been without a club since the termination of his contract with Amedspor in January 2026. Before his time in Turkey, he had already experienced a long period of inactivity.
