Coupe du monde 2026 : La FIFA annonce 5 nouvelles règles
In an effort to streamline the game and assist referees, the IFAB and FIFA have adopted five new rules, according to Sport Illustrated and Gaston Edul. These new rules will come into effect during the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The first rule concerns quick substitutions. Starting with the World Cup, any player substituted by their coach will have 10 seconds to leave the field. If they take longer, their replacement will have to wait a minute before entering, temporarily leaving their team with a numerical disadvantage.
The second rule, like the first, aims to maintain the flow of the game. Indeed, for restarts, whether a throw-in or a goal kick, a 5-second timer will be used. If the player or goalkeeper exceeds this time limit, possession of the ball will be awarded to the opposing team.
In the same vein, for the third rule, FIFA decided that on-field treatment should be done off the field, then leave the player off the field for one minute, unless the injury was caused by a foul penalized by a card.
The fourth decision endorsed by FIFA concerns the rule that only the captain can approach the referee to ask for explanations is reinforced; other players may receive a yellow card if they surround the referee.
Finally, the fifth rule modifies the VAR rule. Starting with the 2026 World Cup, referees will be able to review second yellow cards resulting in expulsions, as well as corners wrongly awarded.
