Coupe du monde 2026 : la FIFA veut revoir à la hausse les primes du tournoi
With just weeks to go before the start of the 2026 World Cup, FIFA is preparing to increase tournament prize money under pressure from several major federations, amid strong tensions over revenue sharing.
This is news that will please the countries that have qualified for the World Cup. A month and a half before the start of the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, FIFA is preparing to approve a significant increase in prize money. According to information relayed by RMC Sport, this increase is expected to be ratified at the governing body's council meeting scheduled for this Tuesday, driven by several major federations, particularly European ones, concerned about the high costs associated with participating in the competition.
This decision comes amid intense discussions about how to share the tournament's revenue. With total revenue estimated at several billion dollars, the 2026 World Cup could reach a new economic milestone.
Initially, FIFA had planned a prize purse of approximately $727 million (nearly €670 million) to be distributed among the 48 participating teams, with $50 million earmarked for the eventual winner. However, faced with pressure from UEFA and several major nations, the governing body headed by Gianni Infantino is now considering an even higher prize purse for a tournament that is already shaping up to be the most lucrative in football history.
