Coupe du monde 2026 : l’Argentine de Messi menacée d’exclusion ?
Having been crowned world champions in 2022, could Argentina be absent from the next World Cup scheduled for the United States, Canada and Mexico, from June 11 to July 19, 2026? The hypothesis, still unimaginable a few weeks ago, is nevertheless beginning to circulate insistently in the Argentine press, against the backdrop of a judicial scandal targeting the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
According to several media outlets, including La Nación, Argentina's national football team, the Albiceleste, has been indirectly weakened by a vast investigation into corruption and money laundering. The case has taken on a new dimension following a series of raids carried out in recent days at the headquarters of the AFA (Albiceleste Football Association) and at several clubs across the country. The authorities suspect widespread financial irregularities involving high-ranking officials within the federation.
Among those named are the president of the AFA, Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia, his close associate Pablo Toviggino, and the deputy treasurer Luciano Nakis. Investigators are also looking into the activities of a financial company, a sponsor of Argentine clubs and the national team in 2024, suspected of fraudulent practices and embezzlement.
While no sporting sanctions have been imposed yet, the risk remains. FIFA has traditionally taken a very firm stance against political or judicial interference in the management of national federations. In an extreme scenario, placing the federation under FIFA's control or excluding it from international competitions could be considered, including for the 2026 World Cup.
"The solution now lies in the courts. It is up to the justice system to quickly determine responsibilities and decide whether the accused officials can remain in their positions," La Nación points out. An unfavorable legal outcome could therefore have direct repercussions on the sporting future of the world champion national team.
For his part, Lionel Messi, the symbol and captain of the Albiceleste, recently confided his desire to play in what could be his last World Cup: "I hope I can be there. I would really like to participate. And if not, I will watch the World Cup differently, but it will definitely be special."
Meanwhile, Argentina is holding its breath. The outcome of the judicial investigation will be crucial in determining the true impact of this affair on the Albiceleste's participation in the 2026 World Cup.
