Coupe du monde 2026 : l’Italie recadre un proche de Trump et défend le mérite sportif
The Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) has firmly rejected the idea of a reprieve for the Italian team for the 2026 World Cup. This hypothesis was put forward by Paolo Zampolli, a close associate of US President Donald Trump, who suggested replacing Iran due to geopolitical tensions with the United States.
Present in Rome this Thursday, the president of CONI, Luciano Buonfiglio, did not mince his words. "I don't even think it's possible. And even if it were, I would feel offended. Going to the World Cup is something that must be earned," he declared, emphasizing the importance of sporting principles.
As a reminder, Italy failed to qualify after being eliminated in the playoffs by Bosnia and Herzegovina (1-1, 1-4 on penalties). This disappointment, according to Italian authorities, cannot be erased by political considerations, even in a tense international context involving the United States under Donald Trump.
