4e édition des régates de Yoff : Entre tradition, sport et plaidoyer social

In a festive atmosphere marked by solidarity, Yoff beach vibrated this weekend to the rhythm of the 4th edition of the traditional regattas, a cultural and sporting event organized by the GIE Yeggo, a platform bringing together fishermen from the Léboue community.

This year, the day, which was marked by peace, unity and self-improvement, was also an opportunity to raise awareness about irregular migration, a phenomenon that particularly affects Senegal's coastal communities.

Beyond the spectacle offered by the canoes sailing at sea, this event carried a strong message intended for young people, but also for the authorities. Baye Gagne Diène, member of the Yeggo Economic Interest Group (GIE), spoke to warn of the alarming situation of fishermen and the economic and social consequences of the scarcity of fishery resources.

"We urge the authorities to give hope to young people. The canoes of irregular migration are often driven by Lebous, because they have lost hope. We have nothing left in the sea. Fish are becoming scarce," he lamented.

In response to this crisis, he called on the government to review its maritime resource management policy. "We are asking the government to further reduce fishing agreements and reduce the number of industrial vessels from 12,000 to 6,000," he said.

The Yoff regattas, beyond their festive dimension, have become, over the years, a space for civic expression where the concerns of local communities find an echo. By promoting this initiative, the Yeggo Economic Interest Group (EIG) aims to reconcile cultural heritage and advocacy for sustainable development, particularly through better management of fisheries resources and an effective fight against illegal migration.
