Bagarre générale en NBA: le match entre Charlotte et Detroit dégénère
Violent altercations broke out on the court of Charlotte's Time Warner Cable Arena, where the Hornets and Pistons clearly had a score to settle. Four players were ejected, but the game was ultimately able to finish.
Cade Cunningham scored 33 points to help the Pistons end Charlotte's nine-game winning streak, but the Detroit point guard's XXL performance was overshadowed by the brawl that broke out in the third quarter.
This already heated confrontation degenerated in the middle of the third quarter when Moussa Diabaté, the French center for Charlotte, committed a foul on Jalen Duren, the center for Detroit.
Diabaté and Duren clashed head-to-head, and the 22-year-old American shoved his opponent in the face. This sparked a general brawl that resulted in scuffles and punches being thrown all over the court.
After several minutes of interruption, the referees ejected Duren and his Detroit teammate, power forward Isaiah Stewart, along with two Charlotte players, Diabaté and forward Miles Bridges. Stewart ran from the bench to join the brawl, attempting to hit Bridges, who punched Duren as tempers flared.
Another incident occurred in the fourth quarter when Hornets head coach Charles Lee was ejected, angered by a foul called against his team. Lee had to be restrained by members of Charlotte's coaching staff before being escorted off the court.
The Detroit coach defends his players
Despite the loss, the coach praised his team's performance, noting their ability to compete with Detroit for an extended period. "It was a very good game for us," Lee said. "The Pistons are the best team in the East and play with great physical intensity. My players responded to every scoring opportunity and that toughness," he emphasized. When asked about the altercation between Diabaté and Duren, Lee stated that "two guys had a heated argument, and then things escalated from there."
Detroit coach JB Bickerstaff clearly placed the blame for the incident on the Charlotte players, stating that Duren was simply defending himself. “I hate that it escalated to this point. But if someone hits you, you have a duty to protect yourself, and that’s what happened tonight,” he asserted.
Detroit remains the leader of the Eastern Conference with five more wins than the New York Knicks, while Charlotte remains in 10th place, the last qualifying spot for the play-in.
