Assane Diao, a young Senegalese striker playing for Como in Italy, expressed his deep disappointment after being forced to withdraw from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, thus missing the opportunity to play in his first major international competition with Senegal.
On his Instagram account, the Lion looked back emotionally on a year of contrasts in 2025, marked by both highs and lows. Despite this disappointment, the player wanted to send a message of support and encouragement to his teammates, wishing them continental glory.

“Sometimes things don’t go as we would like, and the frustration of not being able to change the situation is hard to bear.
My 2025 is ending a little earlier than expected. It's been a year in which I've experienced the two faces of football: a magnificent first part, where I was living through one of the best moments of my career, then a much more difficult second part, marked by too many setbacks.
This situation prevents me from realizing my dream of representing my country at my first Africa Cup of Nations. This makes me very sad and makes this period even more difficult to get through.
I sincerely wish my teammates the best and I hope the trophy returns to Senegal. For my part, I remain focused and continue to work hard to come back stronger and feel fully involved in the rest of this competition.
