AFCON 2025: Morocco makes a strong start to their campaign with a victory over Comoros

CAN 2025 : Le Maroc lance bien sa CAN avec une victoire sur les Comores

Morocco made a perfect start to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2-0 victory over Comoros in the opening match played at the Rabat stadium. The game was marked by an intense but goalless first half, before a second half largely dominated by the Atlas Lions.

An exciting but goalless first half. In the 9th minute, Morocco were awarded a penalty after a foul in the Comoros penalty area. Soufiane Rahimi, tasked with taking the penalty, missed the opportunity to open the scoring.

In the 18th minute, Jawad El Yamiq replaced Ghanem Saïss, who was forced to leave the field due to injury. The Moroccans continued their dominance, launching numerous attacks and set pieces, but were met by a solid and well-organized Comorian defense. While not particularly dangerous offensively, the Comoros remained very disciplined defensively.

In the 42nd minute, the Atlas Lions appealed for another penalty, but after consulting VAR, the referee ruled there was no foul. The match was played in intense heat. During first-half stoppage time, Brahim Abdelkader Diaz received a yellow card for a foul on Comorian goalkeeper Yannick Pandor.

Half-time score: 0-0.

Morocco accelerated after the break. The game changed completely after the restart. Sharper and more efficient, the Moroccans finally made the difference. In the 55th minute, Brahim Abdelkader Diaz opened the scoring, sending the crowd into raptures.

After several substitutions by both teams, Morocco continued to dictate the tempo. This dominance was deservedly rewarded with a second goal from Ayoub El Kaabi (number 20), which definitively sealed the match.

The match ended in a 2-0 victory for Morocco, a deserved result given their dominance, particularly in the second half. This convincing win allows the Atlas Lions to get their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign off to a good start and send a strong message to their opponents.

Franchement, certain Pays ne doivent.pas jouer la CAN car ils gachent totalement la Fete du Football Africain.

Au vu de la prestation des Comores sur ce match d’ouverture, je suis d’avis qu’il y a lieu de se demander comment ont ils fait pour se qualifier à cette CAN. Ce qui me fait dire que ce Maroc n’est pas au niveau qu’on lui accorde puisqu'il aurait dû atomiser un Comores quasiment inexistant. Est ce dû à la pression, on le verra par la suite. Une interrogation persiste, comment se fait il que le stade ne soit pas totalement plein alors que le pays organisateur joue un match d’ouverture de CAN ? Qu’en sera t-il lorsque les autres équipes joueront ou que le Maroc serait éliminé de la compétition ? On regrette déjà la CAN ivoirienne où il y avait forte affluence au stade et ceci peu importe les équipes qui jouaient.
