CAN-Maroc 2025 : Mauvaise nouvelle pour les Guépards du Bénin
In Benin, the Cheetahs' coach, Gernot Rohr, has released a list of 30 players who will participate in a training camp in Ben Slimane, Morocco, ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which kicks off on December 21st in the Kingdom of Morocco. Unsurprisingly, the list includes familiar faces from the national team such as Junior Olaitan, Steve Mounié, Sessi d'Almeida, Olivier Verdon, and Andréas Hountondji. The Franco-German coach must submit a final list of 27 players to CAF by January 11th.
Five key Cheetahs from the team will miss the match against the Leopards
The team's usual starters are guaranteed to be part of it, but unfortunately, not all of them will play in Benin's first match against the DRC in this AFCON.
The CAF has suspended five key players from the Benin national team for accumulating two yellow cards during the qualifiers. These players are defender Mohamed Tidjani, goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou, and forwards Andréas Hountondji, Junior Olaitan, and Steve Mounié, who is the team's captain.
For Gernot Rohr, the suspension of his five players is unfair "since there is an article which says that yellow cards distributed in the qualifiers do not count for the final phase".
"The time allowed to appeal is too short."
He regrets that this sanction came late, depriving Benin of the possibility of filing an appeal.
"We are unhappy with this judgment. Unfortunately, we learned about it quite late and the time to appeal is too short. Otherwise, it would have been worth going all the way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to make a complaint," lamented the Franco-German coach.
