The scheduling of Benin's matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is causing debate within the national team itself. While the Cheetahs' coach, Gernot Rohr, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the imposed schedule, the captain, Steve Mounié, has adopted a more measured tone.
In a press conference, the Franco-German coach made no secret of his annoyance after the matches were played in the middle of the day. "We tried to recover first after the match against Botswana, which was very intense and close. We did that in Rabat, where we are, by receiving treatment. We played our two matches at 1:30 p.m. I understand perfectly well that the so-called smaller teams have to play at that time and the big ones in the evening," Gernot Rohr fumed, denouncing an unequal treatment linked to the status of the teams.
These comments reflect a frustration with the climatic and physical constraints that these schedules impose on the players, especially during a competition as demanding as the AFCON.
For his part, the captain of the Cheetahs, Steve Mounié, wanted to put the situation into perspective, preferring to highlight an economic and media logic.
“I wouldn’t say we’re not being taken into consideration. It’s a matter of television broadcasters putting the big teams in the spotlight. It’s logical. They’re the ones who carry African football. It’s up to us to raise our level to reach those big teams,” he said.
