Afrique du Sud : Hugo Broos sâen va
A new era begins for the South African national football team. Following Bafana Bafana's elimination in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup against Canada (1-0), Hugo Broos officially ended his tenure as head coach of the national team.
The departure of the Belgian coach was confirmed to AFP by an official from the South African Football Association. Hugo Broos also announced his decision in an interview with the Belgian magazine "Humo".
The 74-year-old former coach revealed that the federation wished to continue working with him by offering him an advisory role. This would allow them to continue benefiting from the experience he gained over his many years at the helm of the Bafana Bafana.
Appointed in 2021, Hugo Broos leaves his post with a positive record. He notably led South Africa to a remarkable 3rd place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and enabled the national team to return to the knockout stages of a World Cup, a first in its recent history.
Despite an early elimination from the 2026 World Cup, his time there will be remembered for the return of Bafana Bafana to competitiveness on the international stage.
