Allemagne : Lennart Karl finalement forfait, Assan Ouédraogo appelé en renfort
A major blow for the German team just days before the start of the 2026 World Cup. Young attacking midfielder Lennart Karl has been forced to withdraw after suffering a muscle tear in his left quadriceps during the Mannschaft's last training session in Chicago on Friday, ahead of the friendly match against the United States.
To compensate for this absence, coach Julian Nagelsmann has decided to call up Assan Ouédraogo. The RB Leipzig player will join Germany's training camp in Winston-Salem in the coming days.
Nineteen-year-old Ouédraogo made a strong impression in his first appearance for the German national team last November. Coming on as a substitute in the resounding 6-0 victory against Slovakia in World Cup qualifying, he scored the final goal of the match. A U17 World and European Champion in 2023, the midfielder is considered one of the brightest prospects in German football. Julian Nagelsmann made no secret of his disappointment after Lennart Karl withdrew from the squad.
“I’m really sorry for Lenny. With his relaxed attitude, his flair for the game, his speed, and his personality, he was a perfect fit for our team. It’s a huge shock for him and for us that he’s missing the World Cup. The fact that he’s still young and has many tournaments ahead of him is small consolation. We would have loved to have him with us.” The German coach, however, expressed confidence regarding his replacement:
“With Assan Ouédraogo, we welcome a player who, like Lenny, had a fantastic start with the national team. He too possesses immense talent, and we expect him to play with courage and freedom.”
