Demande d’asile : la capitaine de l’Iran fait marche arrière
While several players from the Iranian women's national team had requested asylum in Australia after the Asian Cup, captain Zahra Ghanbari has reportedly abandoned this approach, according to several Iranian media outlets.
In total, seven members of the team had chosen to remain in Australia after the competition in order to seek political protection. But the situation has changed in recent days. On March 11, one of the players, having decided to withdraw her asylum application, reportedly gave the Iranian embassy the address of the protected residence where her teammates were staying, forcing them to leave for safety reasons.
This incident comes at a particularly tense time. Before their match against the South Korean women's national football team in the AFC Women's Asian Cup, several Iranian players refused to sing the national anthem in protest against the regime in Iran. This gesture sparked a heated controversy in their country.
As the tournament's host country, Australia had offered political asylum to the players who feared reprisals if they returned to Tehran. In Iranian state media, these footballers were labeled "wartime traitors," a particularly serious accusation.
Initially, six players, including their captain Zahra Ghanbari and a member of the staff, left their hotel to request permission to remain in Australia. However, with this change of heart, the future of some of them remains uncertain.
The rest of the Iranian delegation, for its part, reached the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, early Wednesday, before continuing its return to Iran, a journey made complicated by the security situation and the bombings carried out by the United States and Israel against Iranian territory.
