This is a major blow for Senegalese athletics. The Dakar Meeting, the sport's flagship competition, has been removed from the World Athletics calendar. The announcement was made by the president of the Senegalese Athletics Federation (FSA), Sara Oualy, during the morning sports program broadcast on RTS2.
The root of the fiasco: unpaid bonuses
The main reason for this withdrawal is financial and logistical. Sara Oualy acknowledged a significant delay in the payment of bonuses owed to athletes who participated in the 2025 edition. Having been unable to send out invitations on time and provide the necessary guarantees for the event initially scheduled for April, the world governing body decided to remove the Dakar Meeting from its international circuit, Wal fadjri reports.
A setback for local athletes
This decision has caused great disappointment among those involved in the sport. Cheikh Tidiane Camara, president of the Saint-Louis Regional Athletics League, interviewed by the daily newspaper of the Front de Terre press group, regrets the loss of a showcase for national athletes: "It was with great surprise that we learned the news. This Meeting allowed athletes to strive for the qualifying standards for major competitions," he laments.
The same sentiment was echoed by athletes, such as high jump specialist Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Seck, who did not hide his frustration: "This is practically the only major competition we have to shine at home. I was discouraged when I heard the news."
Is there hope of making up for lost time in June?
Despite this setback, the FSA is not giving up and hopes to organize the meeting in June, after the African Championships scheduled for May in Ghana. However, it remains to be seen whether this postponement will truly save face, as the international reputation of the Dakar Meeting seems to be eroding over the years, with Senegalese athletics now appearing to be "slowly dying," the same source wonders.
