Barcelone : la demande folle du club faite à Lewandowski
European clubs recruit top-talented strikers to score lots of goals. But when a big club asks its striker to score even more, it becomes completely insane.
According to a biography of Sebastian Staszewski, FC Barcelona reportedly asked Robert Lewandowski to refrain from scoring in the last two matches of the 2022-2023 season. Having already secured the title, the club wanted to avoid reaching the 25-goal mark in La Liga, which would have triggered a €2.5 million bonus payable to Bayern Munich.
Having scored 33 goals in all competitions, Robert Lewandowski was reportedly "stunned" by this request, especially after scoring four goals in his last three matches. He ultimately played against Mallorca and Celta Vigo without finding the net, but still finished as top scorer ahead of Karim Benzema. This was a way for Barça, then in the midst of a financial crisis, to cut costs.
