Basket- Qualification Mondial-2026 : Cheikh Sarr, coach des Lionnes, analyse la lourde défaite face à l’Espagne
Following Senegal's defeat to Spain (84-51) yesterday, Lionesses coach Cheikh Sarr offered his analysis of the match. Despite the scoreline, the Senegalese coach emphasized his players' commitment to executing the game plan, while also pointing out several defensive weaknesses that allowed Spain to capitalize on their shooting accuracy.
"The Spanish women made thirty assists, which is a large number. But we followed the game plan and I am satisfied with that," he explained.
According to him, the Lionesses generally executed their systems and applied the defensive instructions, even if some errors proved costly against a European team renowned for its offensive efficiency.
The coach highlighted, in particular, delays in defensive recoveries and a lack of focus in certain sequences. "Sometimes we make mistakes: late recoveries, lack of focus, too much help on the weak side. That's why we left too many open shots," he acknowledged.
Against a team like La Roja, these mistakes are costly. The Spanish women converted 10 of their 26 three-point attempts, a feat that largely contributed to widening the gap.
"When you play against a team with very good shooters, it becomes complicated. Spain is one of the best teams in Europe," the coach added.
Beyond the result, Cheikh Sarr explains that this match also served as a tactical laboratory. The Senegalese staff decided to implement a new defensive system in order to test its effectiveness against different styles of teams.
"We didn't decide to play this defense against the USA. We chose to apply it against Spain because we will be facing three different teams in the coming days," he explained.
The goal was to evaluate this formation so it could be used in the future. "The defense is solid, but the rotation is sometimes slow in midfield. We'll correct that next time," he promised.
Already focused on the next stage of the competition, the Lionesses' staff have begun their analysis of their next opponent, New Zealand. "We've already started the scouting report. When we return to the hotel, we'll see how best to share it with the players," said Cheikh Sarr.
The coach also stressed the need to reduce turnovers, an area that severely hampered his team against Spain. "We know New Zealand is aggressive, fast, and has good shooters. We need to correct what happened today. We had 25 turnovers, and that won't happen again on Saturday," he concluded.
